GUYS! Four days until our five year wedding anniversary! We are so excited and cannot believe that five years have gone by. It seems like just yesterday that we were dating, driving to Malibu and sharing our favorite songs to each other. And here we are, five years in, and more in love than ever before. Caleb here again, and I wanted to share what I believe makes marriage work. Many people might say communication, or being happy, adventurous, trust, etc., make marriages work. But I would go a step further and say that beyond having faith in God and trusting Him with my marriage, the number one thing that makes our marriage succeed is loving each other more than we love ourselves. ____ You might be thinking, “Woah Caleb, you have to love yourself, and they need to fit into my life.” And while there might be some partial truth in that, I believe that truly sacrificing myself, and loving Stefanie more will give me a much happier marriage, and a much happier life in the end. This comes in many forms, when I come home after a long day at work, tired, frustrated from dealing with the projects I had that day, and all I want to do is chill out. But then I might see Stefanie, who has had an equally hard day, maybe even so much more, and instead of just going off into my own space, I check in, give HER a massage, make HER dinner, and spend time catering to HER. Whether or not Stefanie does it back (and she does, and loves me so well), it is so important that I am selfless in my actions and emotions with her. It is only then that we will get past the times that I am hurt, sad, or angry, and it will help me when things are hard, to remember my vows, that I said forever, and its time to be who Stefanie needs me to be. This doesn’t mean that I am always perfect, but rather, that I make a conscious effort when I am able to, to put Stefanie before myself. And honestly, it has made for the best five years of my life. God has taught me more about His love, His truth, through this experience because I was willing to trust Him and give up myself for my wife. What things do you do to serve others? We love hearing from you!
